Best Air Filters for Allergies: Start With MERV
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It is the standard rating used to describe how effectively an air filter captures particles of different sizes. Higher MERV ratings generally capture smaller particles, but they also create more resistance to airflow.
For many Dallas-area homes, a quality pleated filter rated MERV 11 is a sensible starting point for allergy concerns. It provides much better filtration than a basic fiberglass filter while remaining compatible with many properly maintained residential systems.
A MERV 13 filter can offer stronger protection against finer airborne particles and is often a good option for households with significant seasonal allergies, pets, or respiratory sensitivities. However, it should not be assumed to be safe for every system, particularly when using a one-inch filter. The blower, return duct sizing, filter cabinet, coil condition, and overall system design all affect whether a higher-efficiency filter can operate without restricting airflow.
