A Dallas summer can turn a minor cooling problem into a major utility bill quickly. The best ways to lower cooling bills are rarely limited to one change. They come from keeping conditioned air inside, helping your AC operate efficiently, and addressing small equipment issues before they force the system to run all day.

For homeowners and business owners, the goal is not to use less air conditioning at the expense of comfort. It is to stop paying for wasted cooling. Start with the straightforward improvements, then let the condition and age of your HVAC equipment guide any larger decisions.

Start With Thermostat Settings That Make Sense

Your thermostat has a direct effect on runtime. In summer, setting it as high as your household can comfortably tolerate reduces the difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures. For many homes, 78 degrees when occupied is a practical target. Raising the setting a few degrees when the house is empty can reduce unnecessary cooling, particularly during long workdays or vacations.

A programmable or smart thermostat can make this easier, but it must be set up properly. Aggressive setbacks are not always the best fit in North Texas. If a home becomes excessively hot during the day, the AC may need a long recovery period in the late afternoon, when outdoor temperatures and electrical demand are high. A modest setback is often more effective than allowing the house to heat up dramatically.

Avoid constantly adjusting the thermostat by one degree at a time. Give the system time to respond. If rooms are consistently uncomfortable even at reasonable settings, the issue may be airflow, insulation, duct leakage, humidity, or an HVAC system that needs service.

Keep Airflow Clear and Filters Clean

A restricted air filter makes an air conditioner work harder to move air across its indoor coil. That can increase energy use, reduce comfort, contribute to frozen coils, and put additional strain on the equipment. Check the filter monthly during peak cooling season and replace it when it is visibly loaded with dust or according to the manufacturer’s guidance.

Choose a filter that fits the system. A very high-efficiency filter can be useful for indoor air quality, but some systems cannot handle an overly restrictive filter without losing airflow. The correct filter depends on the equipment, return grille size, duct design, and household needs. If you are unsure, a qualified technician can recommend an option that balances filtration with proper system performance.

Keep supply vents and return grilles open and unobstructed. Closing vents in unused rooms may seem like a money-saving move, but most central systems are designed to distribute air through the entire duct system. Closing too many vents can raise static pressure and create uneven temperatures. Furniture, rugs, and curtains should also stay clear of registers and returns.

Seal the Places Where Cool Air Escapes

In many Dallas-area homes, the air conditioner is not the only source of high cooling costs. Leaks around doors, windows, attic penetrations, and ductwork allow cooled air to escape while hot, humid outdoor air enters. Your AC then has to remove both heat and moisture from that incoming air.

Weatherstripping and door sweeps are inexpensive improvements with a clear purpose. Check for daylight around exterior doors, worn seals, and gaps where utility lines enter the home. Caulk small gaps around window frames and exterior penetrations where appropriate.

Attic insulation also deserves attention. A hot attic transfers heat into the living space below, especially through ceilings, recessed lights, attic hatches, and poorly insulated ductwork. Before adding insulation, air sealing is often the better first step. Insulation slows heat transfer, while air sealing limits the actual movement of hot air into the home.

Do Not Overlook Duct Leakage

Leaky ducts are a common source of wasted cooling, particularly when they run through a hot attic, garage, or crawl space. A disconnected duct, damaged flex duct, or poorly sealed connection can send conditioned air into an unconditioned area instead of the rooms you are paying to cool.

Signs can include rooms that never cool properly, unusually dusty spaces, weak airflow, or a system that runs for long periods without reaching the thermostat setting. Duct repair can improve comfort and efficiency, but the correct solution depends on the duct layout and the extent of the problem. Simply adding more cooling capacity will not solve air loss from the duct system.

Reduce Heat Before It Reaches the Thermostat

Solar heat through windows can overwhelm certain rooms, especially west-facing rooms in the afternoon. Close blinds or curtains during the hottest part of the day, and consider solar screens, window film, or properly selected shades where heat gain is a persistent problem. These measures can be particularly useful in rooms with large expanses of glass.

Ceiling fans can help occupants feel cooler by moving air across the skin. They do not lower the temperature of an empty room, so turn them off when no one is there. In summer, a ceiling fan should rotate counterclockwise when viewed from below, creating a downward breeze.

Heat-producing appliances matter as well. Run dryers, ovens, and dishwashers during cooler hours when practical. For commercial spaces, review internal heat sources such as lighting, kitchen equipment, refrigeration, and server equipment. A cooling bill may be telling you as much about building heat gain as it is about the air conditioner itself.

Schedule AC Maintenance Before a Small Issue Grows

An air conditioner can still run while operating inefficiently. Dirty outdoor coils, weak electrical components, drainage problems, refrigerant issues, worn blower parts, and improper airflow can all affect performance. Waiting until the system stops cooling entirely usually means losing comfort during the most demanding part of the season.

Professional maintenance provides an opportunity to inspect the components that homeowners cannot reasonably assess on their own. A technician can check operating pressures, electrical connections, condensate drainage, refrigerant performance, thermostat operation, blower performance, and the condition of indoor and outdoor coils. The purpose is not to replace equipment that still has useful life. It is to identify concerns early and keep the system operating as designed.

For older systems, maintenance also provides a clearer picture of whether repair remains the sensible choice. M.B. Kiser Heating and Air Conditioning has served Dallas customers for decades, and an experienced technician can help distinguish between a routine repair and a pattern of declining reliability.

Know When an AC Repair Can Lower Your Bill

A sudden jump in cooling costs deserves attention, especially if your usage habits have not changed. An air conditioner that runs constantly, short-cycles, blows warmer air, makes new noises, leaks water, or struggles to cool part of the building may have a repair issue rather than a simple efficiency problem.

Low refrigerant is not normal wear that should be routinely topped off. Refrigerant operates in a closed system. If it is low, there may be a leak that needs to be located and repaired. Likewise, a dirty coil or failing capacitor may appear minor, but either can affect capacity and energy use during extreme heat.

Do not ignore humidity. A properly functioning AC system should provide both cooling and moisture removal. If the air feels damp even when the thermostat is satisfied, the system may be oversized, improperly configured, short-cycling, or experiencing an airflow or maintenance issue.

Consider Replacement Only When the Numbers Support It

A new high-efficiency air conditioner or heat pump can lower operating costs, but replacement is not automatically the best answer. The savings depend on the condition of the existing system, local utility rates, how much the equipment runs, the building envelope, and whether the new system is sized and installed correctly.

Oversizing is a costly mistake. A system that is too large may cool quickly but shut off before removing enough humidity. It can also cycle more frequently, which can affect comfort and equipment life. A qualified contractor should evaluate the home or building, not simply match the size of the old unit.

For additions, converted garages, rooms with persistent comfort problems, or areas without practical duct access, a ductless mini-split may be worth considering. It can provide targeted comfort without forcing the central system to compensate for a difficult space. For some properties, however, duct repairs, insulation improvements, or zoning adjustments will deliver better value.

The Best Ways to Lower Cooling Bills Begin With Diagnosis

The most effective improvements match the actual cause of energy waste. A clean filter and sensible thermostat setting are good first steps, but they cannot correct a leaking duct, failing component, undersized return, or poorly insulated attic.

If your cooling costs have climbed or comfort has become inconsistent, arrange an HVAC evaluation before the next stretch of extreme heat. A careful diagnosis can protect your comfort now and help you make practical, well-timed decisions about repair, maintenance, or replacement.

We had our second HVAC system installed by M.B. Kiser today. They are excellent. The installation team arrived at 8:30 and left at 6 with all the work complete, area cleaned up and a great Carrier Infinity system installed. We have two systems in our house. We had the same setup installed last year and it has been flawless. The prices are competitive and the installers and service people are professional, competent and excellent communicators. Highly recommend.

Annual maintenance plan is pretty straightforward and a much better value than paying twice a year for the same service at twice the rate. Service manager came out after the first call didn’t fix it, and made sure the unit cooled. Awesome service and friendly people.

I have now used MB Kiser for about 12 years. They have always been fast and honest. Recently, I had my AC go out at my office they fixed it fast with a $35 capacitor. The repair person I had out before Kiser tried to sell me an entire hvac system. Kiser also repaired one of my home units at 8pm on a hot evening fast and easy. Much to my amazement they did not even charge for emergency or afterhours. M.B. Kiser is wonderful to work with.

THIS COMPANY DOES BOTH COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL WORK. HAD A NEW SYSTEM PUT IN AT THE BARBER SHOP. WORKERS WERE VERY PROFESSIONAL AND THE WORK WAS DONE QUICKLY AND CORRECTLY. ALSO HAD THEM COME AND REPLACE A HEATING UNIT AT HOME. SAME GOOD SERVICE AND PRICE WAS COMPARABLE TO OTHER ESTIMATES THAT I GOT.

I have used MB Kiser three times now at two different properties. Kenny and John are the best techs I have come across. This is a company that really puts their customers first which probably explains why they have been around so long.

Happy MB Kiser customer since 2014. Great company, very dependable and always on time. My A/C bit the dust on Monday, and they sent a tech to fix it right away. A broken A/C in Texas during summer time is as good as a death sentence lol. Luckily these guys are always around. Thank you the MB Kiser team and Jordan in particular. Big thanks to Kristen for expediting the part ordering.

They are great. Our downstairs unit went out. They were able to put in the model I wanted. It was a 5 ton horizontal system, and a difficult installation. They had the resources to get it done. They ran into some problems but they charged us what the original bid was. They were also able to fix the upstairs air conditioning. They are very professional and always respectful. They were able to troubleshoot as they went along. If there were any problems, they were able to fix them.

Living in Texas we learn to appreciate our Air conditioners! I was ready to freak out yesterday when my unit stopped working and I am expecting some family over this weekend for the holidays! I started searching for a reputable air conditioning company in the metroplex. Couple of my friends at work referred me to MB Kiser and I decided to give them a try! I have called their customer service and lady on the phone was very knowledgeable and willing to help, which was a big plus for me.

Amy D.

Well we used them twice and both times were happy with the price and work that was done.

Susan M.

They called ahead of time to let us know they were coming. They were right on time. They checked out our heater. We had just bought the house and couldn’t get the pilot light lit. The tech determined that there was air in the line, so he bled the line and got the pilot light lit. He checked out the heater and told us the heater was fine and didn’t need any more work.

We have a service contract with them so they come every six months to prepare the furnace and air conditioner. We get a reduced rate for any repairs because of the contract and we never get charged for any overtime. My parents also use them. I would recommend them. They redid our whole system in our old house. We’ve used them for 45 years. One of the guys remembered coming to our family home when I was little.

Elizabeth A.

Quick response, my AC was out Friday all day and they came out first thing Saturday morning. Jordan answered all my questions, and verified the issue within first 10 minutes. I would highly recommend using them in the future.

Saj J.

Thank you so much for your consideration. I truly appreciate your service to keep my aged system working.
